Optical splitter is the indispensible passive optical branch device in EPON system. As the passive equipment that connect OLT equipment and ONU user terminal, it assign the optical signal that input from feeder optical fiber to several output user optical fiber by power, generally there has five types of branching ratio, 1 to 2, 1 to 4, 1 to 8, 1 to 16, 1 to 32. For branching ratio of 1 to 2, the power has several kinds of division including equal division (50:50) and non-equal division (5:95. 40:60, 25:75). And for other branching ratio, power will divide to several output user optical fiber equally. For uplink transmission, optical splitter coupling the optical signal in user optical fiber to feeder optical fiber and transmit to optical line terminal (OLT).
Optical splitter does not need extra power, only need input optical signal, but it will increase optical power loss, this mainly because they divide the input signal and split the input power. This loss is called optical splitter loss or splitting ratio, usually use db to indicate, and mainly depend on the quantity of output port. Operators can adapt different type of optical splitter by different networks.
